Signature event · A first for TLCA
Bringing Telugu culture to Times Square
· Times Square, New York City · Telugu Literary & Cultural Association
As President of the Telugu Literary & Cultural Association, Kiran Reddy Parvathala led the first Telugu cultural festival TLCA ever brought to Times Square, the crossroads of the world. Around 14,000 people took part.
The festival featured about 35 performances, from classical music recitals to Kuchipudi and folk dances representing the regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. An exhibition showcased Kalamkari textiles and the paintings and sculptures of Telugu artists, while tourists and passersby stopped to watch. The special guest was Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs.
Performers brought Telugu legends to life in the heart of Manhattan, including Rani Rudrama Devi, Sri Krishna Devaraya and Alluri Seetha Rama Raju, along with a dramatized scene from the Mahabharata and a Yellamma folk dance. Kiran and his executive committee received congratulations from across the community for organizing the first program of its kind in TLCA’s history.
For Kiran, the goal was simple: to keep Telugu language and heritage alive for current and future generations growing up far from their ancestral homeland.
